COURTYARD OF URBAN MOBILITY
ROME, ITALY
The Courtyard of Urban Mobility revitalized the existing Piazza della Chiesa Nuova in Rome, Italy. It brings life back to the site and encourages sustainable mobility through reduced traffic patterns, a re-designed bus stop, and the design of a bike rental facility for faster, more accessible mobility in the busy city of Rome.
The sequence of spaces along the site are connected through a curved travertine “spine” to define the space and create an “urban scale courtyard.” The curvature of the spine in elevation was designed to maintain the existing views of the architecture of the site as one approaches from all angles.
Being able to visit the site every day before studio, I was able to closely understand the area, study the views, and visualize the impact the impact a design could have on the site. The history of our site was one of the most exciting aspects of the design. In the beginning, I worked with a group to closely study the site and the surrounding context. Because of the depth of Rome, we discovered many connections between our site and nearby monuments.
